My Time in the Red Schafer Gym
Julien Wilks
I recently started going to the Red Schafer Gym at the encouragement of my friend, Nick. Red Schafer teaches Tae kwon do, wrestling, kickboxing and boxing and UFC fighters have been known to train there, too. I decided to join is because I want to learn Tae Kwon Do. I also have begun learning the art of wrestling, kickboxing and boxing. The gym that I have a membership with is Red Schafer. When I joined, I learned that many MMA fighters have trained from the Red Schafer. It’s been a learning experience for me. As of now, I’m enjoying my time at the gym because the coaches are very attentive and helpful.

The fighting styles that I’m currently working on right now is boxing and kickboxing. The coaches at Red Schafer Gym are teaching these two types of fighting styles because everybody needs to learn how to defend themselves and how to throw a punch properly. My main reason for taking these classes for the past two weeks are that I didn't know how to defend myself. I was worried what would happen if I were to get into a fight. I wondered would I be able to protect my family or be supportive if my friends were being attacked. In the beginning, I was nervous and excited and wondered if I was making a mistake. I’ve always known that that I wouldn’t be able to control my anger. Because of my size, I could really hurt someone. I wanted to be able to learn how to defend myself without seriously hurting someone. I want to be able to be confident and secure in myself and being a part of the gym is helping me get to that point.
But after doing some stretches and learning the beginning movesets I remembered something that I learned when it came to my comic book class and that was nobody is perfect and it takes practice until you get to the point that you want be at and help me be a lot more comfortable learning stuff because I was trying to get all the moves perfect knowing that I was a novice, so now I’m learning the moves step by step until I get to the point that I want to be at. So that was my experience with the gym learning martial arts after leaving there the only thing wanted to do more was to go back there and learn more martials arts. The things that we have to practice or get used to practicing are throwing a cross and a jab and those moves are for boxing and for kickboxing its the same but you also do low kicks as well and a little muy tai. I plan on going to the gym for long time for now because this is very beneficial for me to get into shape, discipline, coordination and hard work.

I’ve been doing some stretches and learning the beginning move sets. I remember something that I learned when it came to my comic book class, and that was nobody is perfect. It takes practice until you get to the point that you where you want to be at. Learning about patience and being comfortable learning new things is helping me when it comes to new feat. Currently I been learning the movement of body. I’m practicing and learning about throwing a cross and jab and kicks in kickboxing. Also, learning about low kicks and a little Muay Tai. It’s different area for me but also, I’m enjoying myself.
So far, I’ve learned that martial arts are more than just fighting. It’s above getting a place in your mind that you are content and developing a sense of self-awareness. I know that I will not learn martial arts overnight. So, I’m continuing with my focus on not only improving my self-defense mechanism but also to improve my body and mind as well. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m committed to succeeding.
