We are writing an article for the website OnMilwaukee. Each person in our class has to interview at least one person to be part of our different articles. I am in the process of interviewing Isaac Daniel who graduated from MIAD last year. He agreed to respond to an email where I have asked him my questions. I am still waiting for him to respond to my email. When he answers the questions in my email I will be able to create a draft of my interview. Then I can get feedback from my class mates and I can see if Isaac likes what I have written about him and make changes accordingly.

In our writing class today we had a guest speaker, Tod. He talked about his art and some of the writing he has published. From Tod's talk today I learned that you should let your writing flow naturally and that you should be in the present moment when writing. He also talked about letting inspiration guide you towards which ever path you want to take, just like he does for his series of art. I learned that you don't always have to meticulously plan your writing, but you should have your most important part or inspiration of it in mind.
In our writing class we are writing an article for OnMilwuakee. For my project I want to interview someone who graduated with an IAD major last year. I want to find the story of how they got to where they are now. I would like to hear their opinion on how they make an impact on the Milwaukee community. Some questions I would like to ask include the following:
- What did you do while a student at MIAD to prepare yourself to get a job right after school? - How did you find your job? - How does you design career fit your personal design interests? - How does the work you do impact the Milwaukee community? I want to tell this story for students who are going to graduate in the next few years so they can see that it is possible to find work after school, and how they could make an impact in the community. The first portfolio I put my eyes on is a local furniture design studio know as The Good Land Studio. Their portfolio shows off some of their best work. Each project has its' own page with a photo on top. Below is a paragraph that explains the design. Then there are more photos of the project. This format makes it easy learn about each project in an organized way. The second portfolio I looked at is a design-build studio located in Chicago. They are known as Kehoe and they design custom furniture, custom lighting and create art work for their clients. There projects are all on one page showing one image of each project. The projects are setup in banners that are separated by category of the type of space. Below the photos they list all the types work they do. This format is alright but does not leave room to learn more about the projects.
After skimming through various news websites and the articles contained in them, I found some similarities and some differences. It was common to see a picture at the top of the article and another picture in the middle. Most articles had ads that broke up the paragraphs. They all had a tittle that summarized what the article is about. For example, On Milwaukee had an article titled Dog Friendly Bars and Restaurants. This article had a list of restaurants and a short paragraph describing each establishment. Most of the articles in On Milwaukee were short and split into sections. On other sites the articles also had links embedded in the article that take you to other articles related to the article. A few articles also used quotes to tell the story from that person’s perspective. In my writing I want to use this idea of spiting the text into sections. Having the text split up makes it seem less stressful to read. I also want to use a quote in my text. The logos of these articles is not much different from one another. They all have a catchy title at the top of the page and a photo that relates to the article. The picture they use can determine the pathos and the way people feel about what they are about to read.
List of news/ article sites used. - On Milwaukee - Journal Sentinel - NBC News - Urban Milwaukee - Milwaukee Magazine In WRTG400, I want to further my knowledge about writing professionally while telling a story at the same time. This will help me in the field of interior design because I will have to tell stories that explain my designs. In this course, I will have to interview professionals in my field. This will help me get out my comfort zone and learn about someone else’s journey. The interview process will prepare me professionally because I will also have to interview clients to find out what they need in their designs. For my final article I am interested in telling the story of how a MIAD graduate was able to become successful in the interior design field.
