When it comes to major national news sites, CNN might be the first to come to mind, as it is easily accessible and widely used. I've picked an art and design centered article as they're typically pretty interesting.
Artist's mysterious 'City' in the Nevada desert open after 50 years

Notes on CNN
  • Branded style is consistent, front page somewhat cluttered with high priority on ad space (ads made to look like articles?)
  • Simple, functional and easy to use site
  • Clicking this article redirects to "CNN Style" consisting of Arts, Fashion, Architecture etc.
Notes on Article
  • Originally posted on "The Art Newspaper", a CNN editorial partner
  • Written by Benjamin Sutton (editor for TAN) photography by Ben Blackwell (freelance)
  • Several paragraph article covering importance, inspiration, meaning, and land disputes
  • Includes links to additonal artist statements/interviews, as well as related issues/info/people
  • Article Takeaway: the project is now open to visit after a long time coming, City is one of the largest contemporary art projects concieved

Polygon is the site I'll be taking a look at for entertainment and gaming news. I have an interest in writing for game journalism and have written about games for reviews, upcoming releases, and essays. Let's take a look and see if their platform would be a good fit for content like mine.
Metal: Hellsinger puts on a hell of a show
Picture
Notes on Polygon
  • Colorful and well designed home page with good sense of heirarchy
  • Categories divided into easily navigatable tabs
  • Articles click through to standard format standalone webpages
Notes on Article
  • Written by Diego Arguello (freelance)
  • Describe's game's objective, genre, and what sets it apart
  • References influential media related to the game including music and other games
  • Gives the reader a good idea of what to expect and what's lacking
  • Article Takeaway: The game is coming out soon and will be a short but enthralling experience featuring DOOM-like visuals and gameplay and features real metal bands with rhythm elements utlilized in gameplay.

For local publications, OnMilwaukee has been recommended. While this site's only gaming coverage revolves around the sports scene, it does occasionally offer articles for art and architecture. I've decided to take a look at an article that discusses a historical building in MKE.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

Notes on OnMilwaukee
  • Colorful and inviting layout, easily navigated
  • Front page topics scream "Wisconsin"
  • Standard article format leaves something to be desired
  • /on categorization is intuitive for internal tagging, but no clear list of every category is easily available
Notes on Article
  • /onUrbanSpelunking
  • Written by Bobby Tanzilo (senior writer/editor)
  • Describes uniqueness, significance, and history of the architecture, as well as some details about the prolific architect
  • Includes conceptual and floorplan art from pre-construction as well as details and art from inside the building
  • Photography could do the space more justice, but still has interesting shots
  • Article Takeaway: Wright died before this building with great importance to him could be constructed, but now it has and Doors Open tours have been given dates

I think your chose for self-directed research, using an aspect of what you enjoy to tie into this project. I feel as though using Polygon as a source was a good starting point to finding articles and written media that you would visit in your every day life.

CNN website cluttered, I agree. To much info even for a news website.

I really enjoy that your blog post is also laid out like articles, including the imagery helps get the idea of what article you were speaking about without having to see it directly. Your notes are also very informative about the choices the website makes when putting out their articles.
